It’s Not Your Sandbox

The truth is, you can build the biggest, most beautiful castle in the marketing world—flawless copy, stunning visuals, brilliant strategy—and still completely miss the point and make the whole structure wobble if you forget this one thing: It’s not your sandbox.

Great brand builders don’t just build—they play well with others. Right?

I’ve been wrestling with this lately while working on a variety of projects and mentoring creative teams. The tension is real: as creatives, where is the line between collaboration and control?

We’re designers, writers, strategists, storytellers. We obsess (rightly!) over color palettes, tone, spacing, segmentation, and storytelling flow. We chase excellence and care deeply about craft. That’s a good thing.

But then… we're challenged with thinking that because we can shape the narrative, we should own the sandbox. And that’s when the trouble begins.

If you're like me and my teams, we sometimes struggle with forgetting that we're not building our own empire — we're building someone else’s. A founder’s vision. A client’s mission. A brand’s evolving story. And how we play in that sandbox matters just as much as what we build.

Brand-focused creativity thrives on collaboration. But it dies in the shadow of ego.

Yes, you might bring the killer concept, the perfect metaphor, the polished campaign. But if you can’t listen, adapt, or make room for some co-creation, you’re not collaborating — you’re just staging a one-person show. (Ok, Warhol!)

We need to lead with curiosity, not control. To create with a mindset of respectful impermanence. Bring your best. Be proud of it. But don’t grip it so tightly that no one else can contribute. And don't forget you won't own it once it's done.

So here's the real creative flex I try to keep in mind: Obsess over details. Fight for the idea. And then... let it go!

Because the truth is: 💥 It’s not about winning. 💥 It’s not about being right. 💥 It’s about building something great together.

This shift? It frees you from burnout. It builds trust. And ironically, it makes your best ideas more likely to survive — because they’re delivered with openness, not ego.

Bottom line: The work isn’t yours. It’s ours. And the best stuff? It gets built when we remember: It’s not my sandbox. I’m just glad I get to play.
